Lakeside Retreat

CHALLENGE

Located at the base of a hill with a landslide risk, this project was in a designated environmentally critical area (ECA) on the shore of Lake Washington. Decades worth of remodels and a settling brick foundation further complicated the remodel of this century-old home.

SOLUTION

The current owners envisioned turning the Frankensteined house – originally a fishing cabin – into a proper lakeside retreat. To frame lake views and let in more natural light, we opened walls and added windows. Dormers were installed to create a clubhouse-style sleeping area for the grandkids. And the lakefront side of the property was re-landscaped with native plants in a more naturally inspired design.

OUTCOME

SBNW worked with the clients while they were abroad so they could return to a chic, Scandinavian-inspired oasis, outfitted with materials they personally sourced from their travels such as 18th-century French white oak from an old farmhouse.
